3 children: Imogen (20, in her third year at Oxford reading English, got a First in Mods and is hence now a Scholar, and just finished a year as Co-President of the Oxford Revue);
Fred (18, 6 ft 5, in his first year at Oxford reading Physics having been a King's Scholar at school); and the fast growing up Honor (11, at prep school in West London).
Interests include shooting, motorcycling, scuba diving, skiing, St Lucia, sailing and watching cricket.
Spent 15 years in the Royal Naval Reserve - joined as an Ordinary Seaman, retired in 1994 as a Lieutenant Commander. During that time had the unlikely experience of commanding HMS HUNTER with the BBC Radio One Roadshow on board, live on Radio 1 for much of the day for a week, visiting places where HM Ships rarely if ever venture such as St Ives, Bude, Lundy Island, Padstow and Bideford. Even found myself in a whole page picture in the Radio Times with Steve Wright and Simon Bates (both of whom were very genuine and entertaining people). From 1996 campaigned endlessly for a website containing all case law, free at the point of use following the Australian model, and co-founded with Brooke LJ (as he then was) and Lord Saville what is now, and has for 12 years been, BAILII at http://www.bailii.org/. I no longer have my Triumph Rocket III motorcycle, it having been written off through no fault of mine. It was a wonderful machine. Here it is. One day, probably when I move out of London, I will have another. Meantime it's 4 wheels, sadly.
